12 Key Learnings from TiECon in Silicon Valley

I attended TiE Silicon Valley’s Conference on the 6-7th May 2016 at the Santa Clara Exhibition Centre. Over 4,000 people attended the event and there was a real mix of Business Leaders, Entrepreneurs and Capital not aligned to any particular market sector.  There were seven streams running over two days making it impossible to see every speaker so I selected a few that seemed interesting. The streams were: Internet of Things, Future of Cloud & IT, Data Economy, Destination India, Entrepreneurship, Trending Technologies, and Social Entrepreneurship.

So what where some of the salient points?

Here’s a summary of things to think about in Twitter form (140 byte size chunks to make you think!) These are in no particular order and I welcome your comments – lots of opportunities for those with ideas:

  1. “Tech companies are brilliant at targeting ads. Why can’t they do the same thing with medicine?” Quantified Self.
  2. “It is better to have 100 customers love you than a 1000 sort of like you.” Varshu Road, Head Global Operations, Airbnb.
  3. “Data is the new oil and cloud is the refinery of that data.” Ravinder Amanaganti, Cisco.
  4. “Email is the best channel for growth and retention.” Amarpreet Singh, Square. I’ve been saying this for years. Interestingly no-one actually said that “Social” was the best way to build a business – either it is now assumed or no longer true. I noted that the speakers only gave out their Twitter handles and not their email addresses…
  5. “Data breaches cost $575B last year.” Ravinder Amanaganti, Cisco. Just think, that’s $100 for every person on the plant and, according to the UN, half the world’s population live on less than $2 per day. How did they afford it?
  6.  “Internet of Things (IoT) investment is different because it cuts across all sectors.” Grant Allen, ABB Technology Ventures.
  7. “Connectivity and interoperability issues are the key places to invest in solutions.” Marty Leorenzo, Kilpatrick Townsend.
  8. “How can technology solve complex health care problems like loneliness?” Personalised medicine session.
  9. “You supported a candidate. They lost. They sell your data to cover the campaign losses…” Did you know? Are you happy? Do you care?
  10. Should your shopping habits and religious affiliations be revealed to politicians for their campaigns? It’s already happening…
  11. “It’s not big data it is algorithms”.  Melissa Davis, Research Director Gartner. Yes, we can all gather data (apparently some companies have Data Lakes) but what are you going to do with it? What question are you trying to answer? That’s the challenge.
  12. “The next disruptive wave is experience.”,  Shantanu Narayen, Adobe.

  1. Hi, Thanks for that. Re point 4. I saw something recently hyping the importance and advent of “Dark Social” i.e. communication that is not public. There were a few killer aps mentioned, one of which was email. I fell off my chair laughing or should I say lol. If you look at the field of content marketing, it points out that social following is only a means to an end. The end is your own private group to market to and the one item you need on that list is the email address.
